The drawing is by Michelangelo, the colour by Pontormo: two Renaissance giants on the same panel. It comes printed on handmade Amalfi paper, in a handmade frame.
A reclining Venus and Cupid, two large, full figures like sculptures.
A landscape format that is perfect above a sofa or a headboard.
A gift for anyone who loves Michelangelo, for a couple, for an anniversary.
In the early 1530s Michelangelo drew a cartoon, that is, the full-size preparatory drawing, and entrusted it to Pontormo to turn into a painting. The picture was intended for the bedchamber of Bartolomeo Bettini, who had commissioned it. Bettini never saw it in place: as soon as it was finished it passed to Duke Alessandro de' Medici, in what the sources describe as a forced purchase.
In the exhibition at the Scuderie del Quirinale in Rome, Bettini's chamber has been reconstructed for the first time, more complete than the patron himself ever saw it. The panel is kept at the Galleria dell'Accademia in Florence, the museum of the David: here, Michelangelo is at home.
Above a sofa, in a bedroom or in a sitting room: it is the gift for anyone who loves Michelangelo and the Florentine Renaissance, and a way to celebrate a love.
