The Old Guitarist by Pablo Picasso strikes at once with its profound melancholy and the human strength it conveys in a single glance. The bent, frail figure absorbed in the music creates an intense image of silence, solitude and dignity, giving a room a rare emotional presence.
The composition is dominated by cold tones of blue, while the brown guitar emerges as the only contrasting colour, becoming the visual and symbolic focus of the whole scene. Later investigations also revealed a hidden image beneath the surface of the painting, a sign that the canvas was reused during a financially difficult phase of the artist's life.
