The artwork

This detailed engraving depicts a solemn moment inside St Peter’s Basilica, probably during one of the Vatican Councils, an event of crucial importance in the history of the Catholic Church. The interior of the basilica, reproduced with great precision, reveals the imposing Baroque architecture, with its massive columns, grand arches and intricate sculptural decorations adorning the walls and ceilings.

At the centre of the scene, a multitude of figures in ecclesiastical dress gathers in an atmosphere of solemn contemplation and discussion. The cardinals, arranged in orderly rows, are shown with their characteristic mitres, which help create a sense of strict formality and hierarchy. The meticulous details of the religious garments and facial expressions give the event a strong human dimension, underlining the gravity and the spiritual and political importance of the council.
