The artwork

An enigmatic and original view of a Roman landscape with the sun at twilight, painted by Jan Frans van Bloemen. The painting is untitled. Large trees stand out, one of them stirred by the wind. At their feet are travellers taking a rest. In the softly blurred background appear a small village and mountains; the sky is clear and cloudy. The dominant colour is green, shaded in many tones.
