The artwork
Original and luminous eighteenth-century depiction of St. Mark's Square, painted by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground is the large, square square, crowded with people, tourists, and Venetian citizens. On the left side, St. Mark's Basilica can be glimpsed, while the tall bell tower is depicted in front. To the side of the bell tower, a large Venetian palace extends across the entire square, while at the end of the bell tower, the island of San Giorgio Maggiore can be seen.
The sky is clear, with a few white clouds on the horizon. The painting, an oil on canvas, is undated. Other variations of this work by Canaletto exist. The work is part of a private collection.
