An original, bright 18th-century depiction of St Mark's Square, made by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground is the great square, crowded with people, tourists and Venetian citizens. On the left St Mark's Basilica can be glimpsed, while the tall bell tower is portrayed from the front. Beside the bell tower stretches a large Venetian palace running the length of the square, while beyond the bell tower the island of San Giorgio Maggiore can be made out.
The sky is serene, with a few white clouds on the horizon. The picture, an oil on canvas, is undated. Other variants of this work by Canaletto exist. The work is part of a private collection.
