The artwork

An original and luminous 18th-century depiction of the Grand Canal with boats all around and a large vessel (a sailing ship) moored at the Molo by the Piazzetta. The water is painted with pale blue-green reflections, lit by the morning sun. Further back the painting also shows the Doge's Palace, the bell tower and the other palazzi of St Mark's Square, as well as the two columns of San Todaro and San Marco. The sky is clear, with a few white clouds on the horizon. The painting, an oil on canvas, is undated. Canaletto created other versions of this work.

The artwork is part of a private collection.
