The artwork
Original and decadent eighteenth-century view of the Colosseum and the Arch of Constantine, painted by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground there is the great Roman amphitheater, left to decay and abandon; its former glory seems distant. Bushes grow within its high, neglected walls. Around the Colosseum there is a dirt square used as a pasture for animals. The Arch of Constantine and the Colosseum are illuminated by the morning sunlight. The sky is clear, it's a beautiful day, but there are a few white clouds.
The painting, an oil on canvas, is undated and is part of a private collection.
