An original and decadent 18th-century view of the Colosseum and the Arch of Constantine, by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground is the great Roman amphitheatre, left to neglect and abandonment; its former splendour seems far away. Bushes grow on its high walls, left untended. Around the Colosseum is an open space of beaten earth used as pasture for animals. The Arch of Constantine and the Colosseum are lit by the morning sun. The sky is clear and it is a fine day, but there are a few white clouds.
