The artwork
Original and rare 18th-century view of the small square in front of the Doge's Palace, painted by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground there is the busy square and the pier, used as a landing stage for smaller boats, including gondolas. The Doge's Palace dominates the scene, positioned to the side and followed along the Riva degli Schiavoni by other buildings. Highlights include the two columns of Venice and Punta della Dogana in the distance, flanked by the splendid church of Santa Maria della Salute. The sky is slightly cloudy, tinged with pale blue and white clouds.
The painting, an oil on canvas, is undated and is part of a private collection. Other variations of this work exist.
