An original and rare 18th-century view of the Grand Canal, by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground is the canal, busy with small boats and a large sailing ship (on the left). The water takes on a soft pale green-blue colour. On the opposite bank of the canal a square-plan church with a great dome is depicted, along with Venetian palaces side by side. The sky is slightly cloudy, shaded in pale blue and white for the clouds.
The picture, an oil on canvas, is undated. Other variants of this work by Canaletto exist; it belongs to a private collection.
