Created by the German-British cartographer Herman Moll in the early 18th century, this large double-hemisphere map reflects the scientific and imperial ambition of Georgian England. Published around 1709–1736 and dedicated to King George, it combines an accurate representation of Europe and the main ocean routes with large areas still uncertain, such as the interior of Africa, the incomplete Australia, and western North America, where hypotheses such as California-as-an-island or the Strait of Anian appear. Around the world map, diagrams of the Ptolemaic and Copernican systems, planets, and trade winds express the Enlightenment's confidence in the mathematical measurement of the globe and astronomical observation.
