The artwork
The Last Rays of the Sun in the Atrium (Les derniers rayons du soleil dans l’atrium) by Stefan Bakalowicz is a scene of extraordinary atmospheric delicacy, in which classical antiquity becomes a theatre of light and silence. The Roman atrium, reconstructed with rigorous archaeological precision, is crossed by the last rays of the sun filtering from above, caressing columns, marble and polished surfaces. The warm sunset light creates a refined play of chiaroscuro, transforming the architectural space into a place of meditation and stillness. The figures, where present, appear secondary to the setting, almost absorbed by the luminous harmony.
Bakalowicz portrays a state of mind: the passing of time, the end of the day, the ephemeral beauty of the moment. The work expresses a poetic nostalgia, in which ancient Rome is evoked as an ideal memory, suspended between historical reality and inner contemplation.
