The artwork
The Triptych of the Temptation of St Anthony is an oil painting on panel by Hieronymus Bosch, datable to around 1501 and held in the National Museum of Ancient Art in Lisbon.
The work depicts the spiritual trials of St Anthony Abbot, besieged by demons, monstrous creatures and fantastic visions symbolising the temptations of sin and the snares of evil. At the centre of the triptych the saint remains steadfast in his faith, while around him unfolds a chaotic, disturbing world populated by hybrid figures and allegorical scenes. The side panels alternate episodes of violence, deceit and suffering, accentuating the contrast between the saint's inner serenity and the outer disorder. Bosch uses an extraordinary wealth of detail, intense colours and crowded compositions to convey a strong moral message. The work thus becomes a profound reflection on human frailty and on the strength of faith in the face of temptation.
