The artwork

In the winter of 1880 the Seine froze, and when the ice began to break up Monet painted the sun setting over the river, red among the floes drifting downstream. You receive it printed on handmade Amalfi paper, in a handmade frame.

  • The sun in the centre, its orange reflection in the water and the village of Lavacourt on the far bank.
  • Orange and blue, warm and cold together: a light that brightens a wall.
  • A gift for anyone who loves sunsets and winter.

Monet was living in Vétheuil, a village on the Seine north-west of Paris; Lavacourt is the small village on the opposite bank. That winter was so cold that the river froze from one bank to the other. When the thaw came, the ice broke into blocks that the current carried away, and Monet, fascinated by the force of the swollen water, went back to the riverbank again and again to paint it.

Here the picture is divided into two bands: the sky above, the water below, and in between the dark line of houses and trees. The colours are few, the orange of the sun and the blue-green of the river and the sky, and the brushstrokes are thick and clearly visible. The original is in the Petit Palais, the City of Paris Museum of Fine Arts.

In a living room or a study it brings the silence of a winter evening on the river. It is a gift for anyone who likes to stop and watch the sun go down.
