The work
Compared to the first prison designs of the 18th century, Piranesi's imaginary constructions are striking in their irrationality. The "Round Tower" is part of his "Prisons of invention" series, built between 1745 and 1750: a passionate scholar of ancient architecture, Piranesi endows his works with refined proportions, but manages to represent in an even more convincing way chaos, an element that still repelled his contemporaries, but which would soon become fascinating to the Romantics, both artists and naturalists.
