The artwork

An original and exquisite work depicting the wedding of Nastagio degli Onesti, painted by Botticelli. The panel is part of a series of four panels inspired by Boccaccio's tale of Nastagio degli Onesti of the Decameron , probably commissioned in 1483 by Lorenzo the Magnificent as a wedding gift for Giannozzo Pucci and Lucrezia Bini. Originally kept in Palazzo Pucci, the panels were dispersed in the 19th century: three are now in the Prado, while the last returned to its original home after various changes of ownership.

The episode depicted is the happy ending of the story, with the wedding banquet of Nastagio and the daughter of Paolo Traversari, set beneath monumental triumphal arches. Botticelli emphasises the splendour and celebration of the Florentine bourgeoisie, highlighting precious tableware, rich dishes, elegant clothes and classicising architecture. The background shows a loggia opening onto the landscape, decorated with the Pucci and Medici coats of arms and sprigs of myrtle, a symbol of love. The conception is the master's, while the execution was partly entrusted to workshop assistants.
