The artwork
The Tribute Money, a fresco painted by Masaccio around 1425 in the Brancacci Chapel, depicts a Gospel scene in which Christ tells Peter to catch a fish with a coin in its mouth to pay the tribute.
The work is famous for its innovative use of linear and atmospheric perspective, which creates depth and realism in the urban space. The lively, realistic figures display natural gestures and individual psychology. Light and chiaroscuro model the bodies with convincing volume, while the dynamic composition guides the eye towards the central gesture of the miracle, underlining the balance between sacred narrative and observation of reality.
