In “The Tower of Marghera” Canaletto turns his gaze outside Venice, along the edge of the lagoon near Mestre, and transforms this fortified outpost into a lyrical landscape. The tower, isolated and somewhat worn, dominates the scene like a silent sentinel, while beside it nestles a low house with chimneys, a sign of a simple life on the margins.

In the foreground fishermen's boats glide across the calm water and figures work, row and haul in nets: the lagoon is not merely a backdrop but a setting of daily toil, rendered in a golden light that softens the harshness of the structures.

Feel history under your fingertips

Our reproductions are extremely faithful to the original and printed on fine Amalfi paper.

It is a paper made exclusively from cotton fibres, thick and naturally porous, yet soft to the touch, with the characteristic deckled edges that bear witness to its handcrafted making.

It is still made today using ancient medieval techniques, in the workshops of Amalfi.
