The artwork
The Three Ages of Man is a painting attributed to Giorgione and painted around 1500‑1501, held in the Galleria Palatina of Palazzo Pitti in Florence. The work is an allegory depicting three male figures of different ages — a youth, an adult and an old man — set against a dark background, from which they emerge in a soft light modelled through Leonardesque sfumato. The youth, in the centre, holds a sheet of music and seems absorbed in reading it; the adult on his right points to or suggests something in the score, while the old man on the left gazes at the viewer with a profound look.
The composition, also known as The Singing Lesson, is interpreted as a symbol of the passage of time, the transmission of knowledge and existential harmony through music, understood as a metaphor for cosmic order and human experience. The painting unites psychological realism and emotional intensity, creating a poetic reflection on the cycle of life
