The artwork
The Tempest is a famous painting attributed to Giorgione, created around 1506–1508 and kept in Venice, Gallerie dell'Accademia. It is considered one of the most enigmatic masterpieces of the Venetian Renaissance and a landmark of landscape painting. The scene depicts an urban and natural landscape, beneath a stormy sky, with a half-naked woman nursing her child and a young man standing, apparently lost in thought or in dialogue with his surroundings.
The iconographic interpretation is disputed: religious, mythological and allegorical readings have been put forward, but none is universally accepted. What is striking is the relationship between the human figure and nature, the suspended, poetic atmosphere, the soft light that blurs the outlines and the innovative use of colour, elements typical of Giorgione's style. The Tempest makes the landscape the protagonist, creating a sense of mystery and meditation that influenced generations of Venetian painters.
