The artwork
"The Rotunda of the Palmieri Baths" by Giovanni Fattori, painted in 1866, is considered one of the masterpieces and a true manifesto of Macchiaioli painting. The work dates from the height of the Macchiaioli movement, an Italian artistic movement born in Florence around the middle of the 19th century, whose artists met at the Caffè Michelangelo. The Macchiaioli sought to break with traditional academic painting, abandoning chiaroscuro and drawing in favour of a painting made of "macchie", or patches, of pure colour.
The picture portrays a group of bourgeois ladies seated beneath an ochre awning at a bathing establishment on the Livorno seafront (the Bagni Palmieri), taking the "sea-air baths", a custom of the time. The women are fully dressed in long skirts, capes and bonnets.
