The artwork
An original and rare 18th-century depiction of an ambassador’s reception in Venice, by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. A notable feature of the painting is the Piazzetta in front of the Doge’s Palace, with the ships at anchor and the crowd of nobles who have come to pay their respects to the new ambassador taking up his post in the city of Venice. Further back one can admire the columns of San Marco and San Teodoro and the dome of the church of Santa Maria della Salute. The sky is cloudy, with rain clouds threatening. The picture, an oil on canvas, is dated 1740. Canaletto created several variants of this painting.
The artwork is on display at the State Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg, Russia.
