The Port of Trapano by William Heather is a rare miniature map created in London in 1802. This map depicts numerous essential local features: salt pits, fishing huts, the old town of Trapani, its fortifications, and other details that faithfully reflect the topography and port life of 19th-century Trapani. The result of a collaboration with John Stephenson, the chart was published in the prestigious volume “The New Mediterranean Pilot,” the first English collection dedicated to Mediterranean ports, renowned for its notable precision compared to earlier French and Italian versions.
Charts from the “New Mediterranean Pilot” are particularly scarce in the antiquarian market, and this representation of Trapani is the first ever documented example to circulate. Individual maps of the Sicilian city from this period are nearly impossible to find, making this chart a unique opportunity for enriching any collection dedicated to naval history, Sicily, or ancient cartography.
