An original and luminous depiction of the Piazzetta San Marco, looking south, by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground is a detail of the Doge’s Palace, with the Molo and all the boats, some of them moored at the quayside, while others are sailing along the Grand Canal. In the Piazzetta, meanwhile, are scenes of everyday life. The Column of St Mark also stands out, and further back the other Venetian palaces of the Riva degli Schiavoni. The sky is clear, with a few white clouds on the horizon. The painting, an oil on canvas, is undated. Other variants of this work exist.
