In this view of the Capitol, Canaletto turns the famous Roman square into a kind of open-air theatre, dominated by the Cordonata rising majestically towards the palaces designed by Michelangelo. The ramp, punctuated by the statues of Castor and Pollux, becomes the stage on which a varied humanity moves: wayfarers, ladies, carriages and figures who enliven the ascent and the square, conveying the idea of a lively, everyday place, not merely a monumental one.
In the background, the Palazzo Senatorio and the side buildings are described with great rigour of perspective, while the clear sky broadens the space and accentuates the monumentality of the scene.

Our reproductions are extremely faithful to the original and printed on fine Amalfi paper.
It is a paper made exclusively from cotton fibres, thick and naturally porous, yet soft to the touch, with the characteristic deckled edges that bear witness to its handcrafted making.
It is still made today using ancient medieval techniques, in the workshops of Amalfi.
