The artwork
"The Painter’s Father" is an oil painting by the famous French Post-Impressionist painter Paul Cézanne, executed around 1865 and held at the National Gallery in London. The work portrays the artist’s father, Louis-Auguste Cézanne, seated in a wooden armchair with an open book on his knees. The figure of the father, who was about 60 at the time, is rendered with great attention to detail, such as the folds of his dark suit and the wrinkles on his face.
The composition is characterised by strong side lighting that creates a contrast between areas of light and shadow, giving the painting a sense of depth and three-dimensionality.
