The Mystic Nativity is a tempera painting on canvas by Sandro Botticelli, dated 1501 and held in the National Gallery in London.
The work is the only one signed and dated by Botticelli; nevertheless its history is unclear: it is thought to have been originally intended for the private devotion of a noble Florentine family. The scene of Christ's birth is depicted with great compositional harmony: the Madonna and Child are at the centre, surrounded by angelic figures expressing devotion and wonder. Botticelli meticulously attends to the details, from the facial expressions to the rendering of fabrics and architecture, creating a sense of intimacy and sanctity.
