The Maternity by Masaccio is a work depicting the Virgin and Child in a moment of intimate tenderness and naturalness. The composition highlights the humanisation of the sacred typical of the Renaissance, with Mary holding the Child with soft, realistic gestures. The use of chiaroscuro and light models the bodies and the folds of the garment, giving volume and depth.
The gaze and posture of the figures suggest affection and protection, emphasising the maternal bond. The work is an early example of Masaccio's psychological and physical realism, anticipating the innovations of the early Florentine Renaissance.
