The artwork
An original 18th-century etching of the Molo in Venice with a detail of boats at their moorings, by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the small square in front of the Molo are many people, busy with their trading. In the background we see a bell tower and the dome of a church and, further to the left, some Venetian palazzi. The boats are neatly moored, with sailors carrying out harbour work. The sky is clear, with a few white clouds on the horizon. The etching is dated 1740. Canaletto created numerous variants of this etching.
The artwork is on display at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, MN, USA.
