The artwork
The work depicts a cattle market scene at San Godenzo, a municipality in the Mugello (Tuscany). Fattori focuses on depicting daily life and peasant labour, giving particular prominence to the figure of the butteri, the mounted herdsmen of the Tuscan Maremma.
At the centre of the scene, or at any rate in a prominent position, are the mounted butteri, depicted in their traditional clothing and hats. They are sturdy, imposing figures, symbolising the toil and dignity of rural labour. Around them, a great number of white cattle, probably of the Maremma breed, create a sense of movement and disorder, with a tangle of brushwood sprouting from trampled, churned-up sand, amid a disordered sequence of the cattle's heads, horns, tails and flanks.
