The artwork
An original and very fine image depicting the Madonna of the Rabbit, painted by Titian.
The Madonna of the Rabbit is an oil painting on canvas (71x85 cm (28 x 33.5 in)) by Titian, datable to around 1530 and kept in the Musée du Louvre in Paris.
In 1529 three canvases ordered from Titian by Federico Gonzaga are recorded. The only one that survives with any certainty is the Madonna of the Rabbit, which owes its name to the little white rabbit Mary is stroking, a symbol of fertility, but also of the Virgin's purity (for its white colour) and of the mystery of the Incarnation.
