The Last Judgement by Michelangelo Buonarroti, frescoed on the altar wall of the Sistine Chapel between 1536 and 1541, is one of the most powerful and overwhelming works in the history of art. The scene represents the final moment of human history, in which Christ the Judge dominates the composition with a vigorous, inexorable gesture. Around him moves a multitude of naked figures, caught in dramatic poses charged with emotional tension.
The saints, recognisable by their attributes, flank Christ, while below the damned plunge towards hell and the blessed rise to salvation. Michelangelo forgoes an orderly, symmetrical structure to create a whirlwind of bodies in motion, an expression of anguish, hope and fear. The work reflects the spiritual crisis of the 16th century and the artist's tragic vision, turning the Judgement into a universal meditation on the destiny, guilt and redemption of humankind.
