The Kitchen Table is a still life in which Paul Cézanne turns a domestic subject into a rigorous pictorial construction. The table, laden with everyday objects such as plates, bottles and fruit, becomes the focus of the composition. The forms are simplified and solid, organised through a carefully studied balance of solids and voids. Cézanne uses colour to model volumes rather than to describe materials: the surfaces vibrate thanks to warm and cool tones placed side by side with precision.
The perspective is deliberately unstable, with slightly tilted planes that break traditional rules and invite the viewer to a more analytical way of seeing.
