An original and luminous 18th-century view of the Grand Canal looking south-east, by Giovanni Antonio Canal. In the foreground is the Grand Canal, plied by boats of various sizes, including some gondolas. Canal has painted the water in shades of light green and light blue. Prominent on the left of the painting are some palazzi "darkened" by their own shadows. In the foreground on the right is a fine church, flanked by other Venetian palazzi. The painting shows the stretch from San Stae to the Fabbriche Nuove di Rialto. The sky is shaded in light blue, with white for the clouds. The painting, an oil on canvas, is undated. Canal created numerous variants of this work.
