The artwork
An original and rare 18th-century view of the Grand Canal seen from the Rialto Bridge, by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground is the Grand Canal, plied by vessels of various sizes. Canal painted the water in shades of light green and blue. Venetian palazzi line the Grand Canal. The sky is slightly cloudy, shaded in light blue, with white for the clouds. The picture, an oil on canvas, is undated. Canal created other variants of this work.
The painting is on display at the Musée Cognacq-Jay, Paris, France.
