The artwork
The Extraction of the Stone of Madness, also known as The Cure of Folly, is an oil painting on panel by Hieronymus Bosch, datable to around 1494 and held in the Prado Museum in Madrid.
The work depicts a man from whose head a "stone of madness" is symbolically removed, by grotesque figures that mix realism and fantastic imagination. Bosch uses exaggerated details and caricatured distortions to emphasise the ironic, moral tone of the painting, showing a contrast between the unwitting protagonist and the figures around him. Every element, from the improbable surgical instruments to the eccentric costumes, helps create an allegory of human vices and weaknesses. The scene is not only social criticism but also a reflection on ignorance, arrogance and the fragility of the human mind. Bosch thus turns a grotesque episode into a powerful moral message, combining fantasy, humour and keen observation of human nature.
