The artwork
An original and luminous 18th-century view of the Grand Canal looking towards its entrance, by Giovanni Antonio Canal. Prominent on the left of the painting is the magnificent church of Santa Maria della Salute. In the foreground is the Grand Canal, plied by boats of various sizes, including some gondolas. On the right of the painting, side by side, are the Venetian palaces, reflected in the canal. The sky is clear, but with a few clouds on the horizon. The picture, an oil on canvas, is dated around 1730. Canal painted numerous variants of this painting.
