An original and luminous 18th-century view of the Grand Canal and the church of Santa Maria della Salute, by Giovanni Antonio Canal. In the foreground on the right is part of the church, with a detail of the forecourt. The Grand Canal occupies the centre, plied by boats of various sizes, including some gondolas. Canal has painted the water in shades of light green and light blue. Prominent on the left of the painting is a splendid Venetian palazzo seen from the front. The sky shows pale clouds on the horizon, but the day remains fine. The painting, an oil on canvas, is undated. Canal painted numerous variants of this work.
The painting is on display at the Louvre, Paris, France.
