The artwork
The The Dresden Altarpiece, painted by Albrecht Dürer in 1496, is an altarpiece in tempera on panel commissioned for the church of St Afra in Augsburg. The artwork is characterised by rich religious iconography, with central scenes devoted to the Madonna and Child, surrounded by saints and angels. Dürer combines the Northern Gothic tradition with the new influences of the Italian Renaissance, evident in the use of perspective and the care given to volume. The details of the faces, fabrics and ornaments are rendered with great precision, showing the artist’s skill in realism and decorative rendering.
The altarpiece expresses both devotion and artistic magnificence, becoming an example of Dürer’s mastery in combining religious narrative with psychological insight into the figures. The balanced composition and harmonious use of colour help create a sense of solemnity and sacredness.
