The artwork
An original and rare 18th-century view of the Doge’s Palace with a view of the Riva degli Schiavoni, by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground is the Grand Canal, plied by boats of various sizes. Canal has painted the water in shades of pale green and light blue. The Doge’s Palace and the Column of St Mark overlook the Grand Canal, lit by a fine morning sun. Along the Riva degli Schiavoni other Venetian palaces can be glimpsed in the distance. The sky is slightly cloudy, shaded in light blue with white for the clouds. The painting, an oil on canvas, is undated. Canaletto created other variants of this work.
The painting is on display at the Castello Sforzesco, Milan.
