The artwork
The Death of the Virgin is a painting in tempera and gold on panel by Andrea Mantegna, made around 1462 and now held at the Prado Museum in Madrid. The small panel of Christ with the Virgin's soul, held at the Pinacoteca Nazionale in Ferrara, belongs to the same work.
The work is generally identified with the altarpiece that adorned the private chapel of Ludovico III Gonzaga in the Castello di San Giorgio in Mantua.
