The Dead Christ Supported by an Angel, or more simply Pietà, is an oil painting on panel by Antonello da Messina, datable to around 1476-1478 and kept in the Museo del Prado in Madrid.
Attention to anatomical detail and the skilful use of light make the body of Christ extremely realistic, while the angel, recollected and silent, heightens the solemnity of the scene. The panel shows the fusion of Flemish naturalism and Italian Renaissance solidity typical of Antonello. The neutral background focuses the eye on the figures, creating strong emotional identification. The work conveys grief, compassion and recollection, expressing a profound spiritual and psychological dimension.
