The artwork

The Crowning with Thorns, or Christ Mocked, is an oil painting on panel by Hieronymus Bosch, datable to around 1485 and held in the National Gallery in London.

The scene is built around the figure of Jesus, shown silent and meditative, surrounded by hostile figures who embody human cruelty and incomprehension. Bosch focuses on faces and gestures, turning the Gospel episode into a moral reflection on innocent suffering.

The close-up composition heightens the emotional tension, while the sober colours and strong contrasts of light help create a dark, dramatic atmosphere. Typical of Bosch's style is the psychological rendering of the figures, often exaggerated and distorted, which underlines the contrast between Christ's serenity and the moral violence surrounding him. The work invites the viewer to meditate deeply on pain, faith and the human condition.
