An original and rare 18th-century view of the Colosseum in Rome in its decay, by Giovanni Antonio Canal. In the foreground is the great Roman amphitheatre, with its circular form. The mark of time, neglect and oblivion can be seen in the shrubs growing on the columns at the top. Outside the Colosseum is a square of beaten earth with scenes of everyday life. The sky is slightly cloudy, shaded in blue and light blue, with white for the clouds. The painting, an oil on canvas, is undated.
The painting is on display at the Galleria Borghese, Rome.
