The artwork
An original and rare 18th-century view of the choir of St Mark’s Basilica in Venice, by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto, in pen, ink and watercolour on paper. In the foreground is a detail of the splendid church of St Mark, with a balcony supported by columns where the choir is rehearsing. At the foot of the balcony, worshippers are listening to the voices of the choir as it performs. The work is dated 1766.
The painting is on display at the Hamburger Kunsthalle, Hamburg, Germany.
