The artwork
An original and luminous depiction of the Bucintoro passing in front of the Doge's Palace in Venice, by Giovanni Antonio Canal. In the foreground is the basin with all the boats around the Bucintoro, flying the banner of the Serenissima. The painting shows the Doge's Palace and the other buildings of St Mark's Square. The sky is clear, with a few white clouds on the horizon. The painting, an oil on canvas, is dated 1730. Canal painted numerous variants of this work.
