The artwork
Boulevard Montmartre, Sunset Effect is a work that captures the essence of 19th-century Paris, exploring the dynamism of urban life in the light of sunset. Painted in 1897, the painting shows the famous Parisian boulevard bathed in the warm, golden light of sunset, with traffic, people and carts moving along the street. The scene is busy, yet the intense light of the sun sinking towards the horizon gives the whole landscape a sense of calm and beauty. The artist manages to convey the movement of the city without giving up his characteristic search for tranquillity.
The palette chosen by Pissarro is dominated by the warm tones of the setting sun, reflected on the streets and on the façades of the buildings. Orange and golden hues mingle with shades of blue and green, creating a fascinating visual contrast. The brushwork is fluid, vibrant and broken, typical of the Impressionist style, allowing the light to emerge in a natural, organic way. The rendering of the light, which changes with the time of day, is one of the most powerful features of the work and gives the scene a unique atmospheric quality.
