The artwork
The Banquet in the Pine Forest is one of the panels of the famous cycle of Nastagio degli Onesti, painted by Sandro Botticelli around 1483 and inspired by a tale from the Decameron by Giovanni Boccaccio. The work depicts the climax of the story, when Nastagio organises a sumptuous banquet in the pine forest to show the woman he loves and her guests the terrible vision of the infernal hunt.
The scene is structured with great narrative skill: in the foreground the banquet takes place, while in the background the violent episode of the woman pursued by the knight reappears. Botticelli combines decorative elegance, attention to worldly detail and dramatic tension, creating a refined balance between storytelling and moral symbolism. The work testifies to the artist's ability to translate literature into complex and highly evocative images.
