The artwork
Original and luminous eighteenth-century view of Westminster Bridge in London, painted by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. The great river is prominent, with many boats, some on the shore, others sailing. Further in the background there is the bridge with its 15 arches connecting the two banks of the Thames. On the right there is the terrace of Somerset House, a landscape viewpoint, a family strolling. In the distance, also on the right, a portion of eighteenth-century London can be seen.
The sky features light clouds on the horizon, but the day remains clear. The painting, an oil on canvas, is undated and is part of a private collection.
