The artwork
Original and luminous eighteenth-century view of the Thames, painted by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. The scene is depicted from the terrace of Somerset House; there are several passersbys on the grand avenue, some of them gazing at the landscape from the terrace. The great London river stands out, with its width dominating the entire painting, traversed by boats of various sizes. On the opposite bank, London unfolds, with its Anglo-Saxon-style buildings and tall churches. The sky features dark clouds on the horizon, painted by Canaletto with shades of pink, but the day remains clear.
The work, an oil on canvas, is undated. Other variations of this work by Canaletto exist.
