An original and luminous 18th-century view of the Thames from Richmond House, by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. The great London river stands out; with its considerable width it dominates the whole painting, plied by boats of various sizes. On the opposite bank London spreads out, with its English-style buildings and tall churches. Closer to the foreground is a building with a view over the river. A few people are on the promenade. The sky has dark clouds on the horizon, but the day remains fine.
The work is dated 1746. Canaletto created another version of this painting.
